March 26, 2020

Dear CGU Community,

In our ongoing effort to keep our community apprised, we want to share that a case of COVID-19 has been confirmed for a member of The Claremont Colleges. A Pomona College student who left campus March 13, and has not returned since, notified the college yesterday that they tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19) on March 24.

With the global pandemic and community transmission of the virus in Los Angeles County, we will likely see more cases in our wider college community.

In this case, Pomona College leadership is working to identify and notify any community members that may have been in contact with the individual. In any future case, the colleges will work to notify other community members that may have been in close proximity to the person without identifying them by name.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the virus is thought to spread mainly between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet) through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. If you experience symptoms of respiratory illness (fever, coughing, or shortness of breath), please contact your health care provider.

Staff or faculty members diagnosed with coronavirus or told by a medical professional they may have it should contact Director of Human Resources Alejandra Gaytan. Students should contact Dean of Students Quamina Carter.

As you know, our final in-person classes for the spring semester occurred during the week of March 9. Additionally, CGU staff and faculty are now telecommuting with an extremely limited on-campus presence to support critical operations.

We encourage everyone in our community to continue social distancing practices and maintain good health habits to inhibit the spread of the disease. We understand this is a difficult time for many in our community. Please take advantage of available services, as needed.

Please visit www.cgu.edu/emergency for campus updates, available resources, and information.
