March 12, 2020

Dear CGU Students, Faculty, and Staff,

The CGU leadership team has been monitoring the latest developments, listening to input from our campus and community, closely listening to recommendations from the health authorities, and making decisions in the best interest of the CGU community. In response to the rapid progression of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic nationally and globally, CGU is adopting additional precautionary measures. Although no coronavirus cases have been reported in Claremont, government officials are predicting that the virus will continue to spread. Neighboring Pomona Valley Hospital has experienced a COVID-19 death, the first in Los Angeles County.

In light of evolving developments, CGU will fully transition to online class instruction following our one-week spring break. Beginning March 23, all instruction will be conducted in an online format for the remainder of the semester. We recognize that there will be disruption, especially during the initial weeks of moving online. We are consulting with faculty who may require an additional week following the March break to put their plans in place, so students should watch for communications from professors about the specifics of each class. We are committed to ensuring students can complete all of their requirements, including coursework, exams, and advising, as well as dissertation defenses, using the technology available to us. The registrar will be following up regarding procedures for degree completion.

As we limit the activity around campus, please note that many events and activities will be postponed or canceled. Please check the status of any event you plan to attend.

It is imperative that everyone do their part to inhibit the spread of the disease. With the number of confirmed cases increasing in Los Angeles County and surrounding areas, we believe it now prudent to limit personal interactions, even in our community of graduate-only students, small class sizes, and with students living off campus.

For ongoing updates and more information regarding campus guidance, please visit CGU’s COVID-19 status page. Additionally, you may contact the following individuals for specific questions.

Sincerely,

Len
