The Provost’s Office and academic deans and directors will work with faculty members to support hybrid delivery of instruction. All faculty members teaching in fall have access to workshops and resources to support the hybrid requirements.
Returning to Campus
All staff, faculty, and students will be required to take a brief online program before returning to campus. The program will inform individuals about what to expect while on campus and the enhanced procedures being taken by the university regarding sanitizing, social distancing, and more. Additionally, the training will outline what is expected of all individuals returning to campus, including the use of personal protective equipment, which will be provided by the university.
Learn more about the full procedures for returning to the CGU campus and access relevant forms on this page: CGU COVID-related Procedures for Faculty, Staff, and Students Visiting Campus
Faculty are expected to work from home wherever possible and must request and receive approval to be on campus.
In her recent email to faculty, Provost Patricia Easton offers the following guidance:
- All campus activities such as conferences, special lectures, trainings, and events are postponed until further notice or conducted fully online.
- Faculty may request limited access to campus for the purposes of instructional and technical support to deliver classes online, or to conduct research in cases where necessary materials are available only on campus, but they will be asked to perform these activities in physical isolation from others and with appropriate notification and approvals so that we can follow cleaning, distancing, and contact tracing protocols.
- If permitted, all approved in-person labs, studio, practica, tutorial, and research spaces will be identified and assigned to rooms and subject to campus protocols. Faculty may not use their offices or other unauthorized spaces on or off campus for CGU related business or meetings.
- Students and faculty will be allowed on campus for only the exempted activities outlined above, and otherwise only with permission, until further notice.
- There will be mandatory training, strict protocols, and prescribed procedures for all individuals granted on-campus presence for safety and security.
Instructors teaching in person will be provided with clear full-face shields to best support the delivery of information to students. As with all CGU community members, cloth masks that cover nose and mouth must be worn when walking throughout campus or in any shared space. Masks may be removed only in an environment in which an employee works in a non-shared and private space. Cubicle spaces or any offices with portable partitions are not considered private and masks must be worn. We have also ordered cloth masks for faculty for when they aren’t teaching.
Teaching & Learning
CGU will implement an Online Flex option in which all classes will be conducted fully online except for labs, studios, practica, one-on-one tutorials, and research studies that require hands-on work and physical access to campus spaces. Eligiblity for on-campus activity is subject to CGU approval and to CDC, state, and county health and safety guidance.
In addition to courses taught entirely online, all classes that have an in-person component should be delivered in a hybrid format in which students can access all material either in person or remotely. Instructors are encouraged to visit the Academic Continuity for Faculty information page for information and resources.
The CGU Class Schedule is being updated to reflect which courses will be offered online and which need to be taught in person. It is strongly recommended that faculty reach out to students enrolled in each class, describing to them how the class will be offered and what special advice, if any, the instructor can offer before the class begins.
Faculty will not be required to offer in-person office hours or support. Faculty and students are encouraged to utilize Zoom videoconferencing for one-to-one discussions.
All faculty are required to record their sessions to allow students to access the information asynchronously. Please visit the Academic Continuity for Faculty page for further guidance on how to record and access class sessions. Please review the new Zoom/Videoconference policy for information on how to support the safety and security of remote instruction using conferencing tools.
Faculty should post all class materials to the Canvas course sites for access by students. Faculty are encouraged to distribute all material via electronic means – even if sessions are held on campus. Please avoid the production and distribution of paper handouts.
Spring semester begins on Tuesday, January 19 and concludes on Saturday, May 15.
We are reviewing all spaces in which instruction can take place in a manner that allows for proper social distancing. In addition to our standard indoor classrooms, the university is planning to use outdoor spaces that could effectively be used as classroom space.
Faculty are asked to utilize their assigned technology and equipment when inside the classroom to avoid surface contamination. This includes computers, tablets, and white board markers/erasers. When using room-based/shared equipment, please be mindful of proper handling and cleaning protocols. Wipes in each classroom will be available to clean equipment between users.
All classrooms will be equipped with cameras and associated audio equipment to support a hybrid class operation.
All classroom facilities will be cleaned between each usage of the room. Additionally, cleaning and sanitizing solutions will be permanently located in each classroom. Faculty and students may utilize the cleaning products for additional cleaning, as needed.
Buildings and shared spaces will be cleaned daily. Anyone using shared spaces and/or equipment such as printers, copiers, appliances, etc., should be mindful of proper handling and cleaning protocols. Cleaning stations are being installed in many shared areas.
Campus Procedures
During the campus shutdown, all buildings on campus have been cleaned and sanitized. Enhanced cleaning procedures will remain in place when employees and students return to campus. Sanitation stations are being installed in classrooms and other high-volume areas.
When on campus, employees are required to wear face coverings in the proper manner (nose and mouth covered) when walking throughout the campus and in any shared space. Masks may be removed only in an environment in which an employee works in a non-shared and private space. Cubicle spaces or any offices with portable partitions are not considered private and masks must be worn.
You should monitor your temperature each day you are on campus. If your temperature is 100.4 degrees or higher or you exhibit other symptoms consistent with COVID-19, you should stay home and seek health advice. All students and staff planning to be on campus are asked to fill out a Qualtrics survey daily so that we can use this information for contact tracing if necessary. Only Human Resources staff will have access to this data, and it will be deleted on a monthly basis.
Everyone is encouraged to follow the health and safety guidelines shared by the CDC and the Public Health Department.
Travel
All university-sponsored travel is prohibited at this time. Any exceptions must receive approval from a dean or vice president. Any student or employee who travels domestically or internationally must quarantine for 14 days before coming on campus in compliance with CDC guidance.
COVID-19
Any employee that feels ill or has any symptoms aligned with COVID-19 should not come to campus. Please contact your doctor for advice and possible testing.
View current CDC guidelines on COVID-19 and returning to work.
If you have tested positive or been directly exposed to someone that has tested positive for COVID-19, please isolate yourself from others immediately and seek advice from your doctor. You must isolate for no less than 14 days before returning to campus. View current CDC guidelines on when to quarantine.
If a staff or faculty member needs to enter a period of isolation and cannot work, sick leave will be applied to time away from work. Please contact HR for further information or to discuss individual situations.
To support the overall health of our community, we request that any CGU community member that tests positive for COVID-19 AND who has been to campus in the previous month, notify CGU Human Resources, alejandra.gaytan@cgu.edu.
If you feel the need to be tested for COVID-19, please contact your personal healthcare provider for information.
Employees that test positive for COVID-19 or who have been directly exposed to someone else that has tested positive should inform Human Resources as soon as possible. Human Resources staff will conduct contact tracing to identify and alert anyone with whom you may have had contact while on the CGU campus.
